Proof-reading

Proof-reading is a critical component of publishing by any self-respecting author.   The author is far too familiar with the text to be able to identify all of the corrections that will become necessary after numerous re-drafting sessions.

Failing to address any content issues is bound to have a very negative impact on the impression given by your manuscript.  It could, in a worst case scenario, prevent your manuscript from being purchased by a potential reader.

In strict publishing terms, the roles of proof-reader and copy-editor are quite distinct.  However, at "Proof Where Needed" our approach is to simplify matters for independent authors who may desire a combination of these services:

Level 1: Standard - this is our basic proof-reading service which focuses primarily on identifying and correcting grammatical and typographical errors throughout the document, as well as identifying any inconsistencies in style or convention.

Level 2: Intermediate - this incorporates Level 1 and adds elements of copy-editing.  It can often apply to multi-author works when presentation is uneven and the text requires structural intervention for clarification. The copy editing work constitutes rephrasing as necessary rather than rewriting.

Level 3: Advanced  - this level has more extensive copy editing and is usually required where the author is primarily an information provider and not necessarily an experienced writer.  As a result, reconstruction and rewriting are necessary in order to adapt the material for its defined market.

Although we expect our clients to be drawn primarily from the world of self-publishing, we are also positioned to be able to assist students with the finalization of college or university dissertations, especially with regard to proof-reading.

See our Rates page for details of our fees for each of these services.
